We recognise that simply offering easy trails may not satisfy the more experienced off-road rider, so we are also able to offer a selection of more difficult routes for those that want more of a challenge.

These will still incorporate some beautiful scenery but by their very nature will be more technical. These have been hand-picked by riders who have many years of experience of riding this terrain and include some really steep climbs, descents and rocky tracks. There is the option of taking to one of the many motocross tracks around the area should you wish to try your hand at circuit riding and jumps etc.

We caught up with our tour guide in Cómpeta THE FLYING CARROT and asked him about the tours he has put together with the aim of satisfying the needs of the more experienced off-road rider as well as the less experienced.
‘I’m the luckiest guy around’ he said, ‘I’m living in a geographical paradise for off-road riding, my back door opens onto the magnificent Almijara Sierras which joins the Tejeda and Alhama Sierras; a whopping 40,663 hectares of spectacular Natural Park land’.

The terrain is vast and there are trails suitable for intermediate to expert ability off-road riders. The safety talk gives me the opportunity to hand over some technical riding information enabling the rider to think about the importance of relaxing whilst riding through the sections. There are many opportunities to stop and rest and to talk through some techniques in order to ride well from point to point.
It’s just as satisfying to get a steady flow on as it is to ride at fast speed, but generally speaking the latter comes with a little more practise and some familiarity with the earth below the wheel which can be anything from smooth graded and sweeping stretches to rocky, bone shaking stuff. In the same way that confidence grows so will the enjoyment of your day.

It is important that every rider achieves something positive by the end of each tour be it improved technical ability, confidence, or simply sheer enjoyment. Enthusiasm and passion go a long way to helping each individual advance and I like to see this quality in my tour subjects. Normally speaking the first tour is my opportunity to evaluate the rider’s level of skill and determines where we go and what we do for the remainder of the tour dates.

WHERE ARE YOU TAKING US TODAY?
The Sun and Wine Route – fairly low down in the foothills of the Almijara Sierras giving you a chance to discover the superb KTM engined Beta RR 450 full spec Enduro Bike, it’s handling characteristics and potential. Ride at your own pace over the terrain and have a splash through a few river beds.
WHERE ARE YOU TAKING US TOMORROW?
The Mudejar Route – a little more demanding and challenging on the upper slopes providing some rugged and uneven terrain; there are good opportunities here for you to improve further on your riding skills and build on your confidence.
AND, THE DAY AFTER?
The Mountain Route – WELL above sea level – time I showed you guys what you’ve really come for. I’ll take you through stunning mountain passes and steep-sided ravines where we can look at the marvels of the deep plunging cliff-faces. Maybe we’ll get time to go to the ‘playground’ and practise a few circuits as well.
GREAT, WHAT OTHER ROUTES DO YOU HAVE?
The Alhama Fun Run – Here we take the bull by the horns. We cover a lot of distance and most riders feel a great sense of accomplishment by the end of this day.
We also have 'THE FLYING CARROT Run' ha ha!.
WHAT’S THAT?
Whatever feels good on the day but generally speaking it’s a bit of everything, all my favourites including a few challenges if you want to try them.

WHAT DO YOU SAY THE TOURS BRING TO THE CUSTOMER?
This is an extremely impressive territory, Mother Nature was in HER element when she created the Malaga Mountains and the Axarquia Region. It’s a truly varied landscape for developing your riding skills. There are mountain peaks like you’ve never experienced before and breath-taking valleys which makes for some awesome riding. And of course, the BETAs - a superb high spec. competition Enduro, it’s the sort of machine you need when covering many kilometres in a day, sometimes as much as 150Km. You know, Don Quixote had Rocinante.
WHO’S ROCINANTE?
His hack.
WHO’S DON QUIXOTE?
Never mind mate. Andalucian Trail Tours have got the BETA RR 450 and that’s what counts, no heavy, outdated rubbish bikes on my tours - these are simply the best bikes for this area!
WHAT IS YOUR MISSION STATEMENT?
Follow ‘the carrot’ and ride with passion.
We left THE FLYING CARROT in his domain of sun, grapes and awesome motorbike trails and returned home to the UK with only one objective in mind and that is to return soon to the land that the Moors (the Arabs) once called, ‘THE LOST PARADISE’.
And ‘passion?’, promise you mate, we won’t come without it.

About the routes we use
The routes we use are all legal rights of way, covering many different types of terrain. There are the almost obligatory dusty trails, rocky sections, streams and narrow tracks that lead to some of the most spectacular vistas in Andalucia.
These have been found after many days of research, leading to many dead-ends! The result is a wide catalogue of available routes for all ability levels – we don’t just say it, we mean it.
We believe we are the only company operating in Spain that have separate guides and bases for novices and experts. Our Scenic Tour guide leader will encourage you to ride within your limits and tailor the route to your abilities while the Terrain Tour guide leader, who has competition experience, can take you at a pace you are happy with over more demanding terrain.

Either way, whatever your level and desires, we can accommodate you!
Nobody, but nobody, takes offence to bikes and bikers in this part of the world – it’s part of the Spanish culture.
It’s not uncommon to see teenagers wheelying mopeds and 50cc trail bikes along the village streets with no problems with police or other road users – takes some getting used to when all you’ve known is the anti-bike feeling that is prevalent in the UK.
As long as you don’t damage farmers’ crops (we never take you through cultivated farmland) then you’re greeted with a wave and a smile wherever you go – you’re made to feel like someone special when you do ride through a village, rather than a criminal!
Pound for pound, we think this is the best way to get to see the areas’ outstanding beauty, wildlife and topography - something that you can’t see by any other means.
