EXPLORER TOUR - VILLANUEVA DEL TRABUCO

Just 45 minutes from either Malaga or Granda airports, the base for the Scenic Tour is in a beautiful white village called Villanueva del Trabuco, some 700 metres above sea level and in the immediate vicinity you will find a wide range of landscapes and wildlife. We are ideally situated in the middle of Andalucia amidst several mountain ranges with masses of trails and scenic routes right on our doorstep. It’s not unusual to encounter snow in winter on some of the higher trails but it’s rare for it to last more than a few days. During these times we will alter the routes for the safety of our guests. It can get cold here, with January and February being the coldest months but these things are all relative, as it’s still a better climate than the UK, with nowhere near the level of rainfall that you guys have to suffer and it’s really only at night that you feel the cold anyway.

TERRAIN TOUR - COMPETA

For riders wishing to take the Terrain Tour option we have the fleet of Beta’s located closer to the coast in Cómpeta, where the guide for these trails lives. Just 45 minutes along the coast from Malaga airport, the terrain is more suited to riders with previous off-road experience and THE FLYING CARROT has a wealth of knowledge of these routes as he’s covered hundreds of miles of them so can ensure the best areas are visited. The town of Competa has a wealth of bars and restaurants and the coast at Nerja is only a 20 minute drive away should you feel the need to go “English”!

There are riding stables, tennis and squash courts, beauty salons and a couple of swimming pools in or near the village for everyone’s convenience – non riders alike are catered for here. For further information for activities available for riders and non-riders alike please click here

Being closer to the coast, the weather is a little warmer on winter nights and a little cooler during the peak summer months than Trabuco.

Things to do for non-riders or extra days

Villanueva Del Trabuco

For those riders who have chosen the Scenic Tour in Villanueva Del Trabuco, there is plenty to do when not riding, or for partners looking to keep themselves busy.

Horse Riding - Located just 3km from the village is Cortijo Los Lobos where you can enjoy the stunning surroundings on four legs! Catering for beginers and children right up to established horsemen there is something for everyone. You can visit their website cy clicking the link below:

www.cortijoloslobos.com

Hiking - There are some lovely walks around the area and we can point you in the direction of local English people with experience of the best places to try.

Watersports/Fishing - There are 4 lakes within 30 mins drive that you can swim in or just relax next to and perhaps have a picnic. The lake at Iznajar has a sandy beach where you can hire pedaloes etc in the summer and is a popular spot for windsurfers and canoeists. There is fishing allowed if you hold a current UK fishing licence.

Mountain Biking - For those who prefer pedals to power 2 wheels then there are facilities available for mountain biking and endurance training days/weeks from Rio Frio, who have a huge knowledge of the area. You can visit their website by clicking the link below:

Swimming Pool - There is a communal pool immediately behind the starting point of our Scenic Tours and is open from mid-May to September. It has a separate pool for toddlers as well as a great restaurant which is also open in the evening. No loungers for hire but there are tables and chairs and grassy areas to lie out on, as well as a lifeguard on duty.Beautiful views of the whole village can be seen from here as it is located at the highest point of the village in the old quarter. Entrance is a paltry 2 euros or so for the whole day!! Doesn't get overly busy apart from Sundays when whole families turn up - strangely it tends to be busier in the evening when people come to eat..

Climbing - There's great rock-climbing to be had in the next village at Villanueva del Rosario. There aren't places to hire equipment unfortunately but plenty of climbs from easy to challenging if you can bring your own gear. Alternatively, the famous El Chorro Gorge on the other side of Antequera is only a 30 minute drive away.

Tennis - There is a tennis court also at Rosario and they only charge 3 euros per hour - no equipment is available to rent from there as it's in the grounds of a (brilliant) restaurant, although we can arrange hire rackets and balls for around 5 euros for the whole day.

Inspiration - The area is a favourite place for keen painters to come to - there is a local company that caters for this.

Pub-Quiz! - There is a "pub quiz" once a month in the local English-run cafe/bar which visitors are welcome to join.

Sight Seeing - The historic town of Antequera is only 20 mins drive away and has some beautiful architecture and apparently the most number of historical buildings per town of anywhere in Spain, so many of the buildings are very much as they were hundreds of years ago.

The National Park of El Torcal is nearby, as is El Chorro Gorge and worth a day trip. Also nearby is Lobo Park (www.lobopark.com) where you can see wolves by day or on special night trips when they do "Howling Tours"!! Highly recommended!

Further afield, Granada is a beautiful city with not only the famous Alhambra Palace but has a cafe culture feel to it which is very similar to Barcelona. From there it's a short drive to the Sierra Nevada mountain range - the highest point in mainland Spain is here and whether guests want to walk, cycle or ski this is the place to do it! Skiing is normally available from November through to April depending on snowfall and there are numerous ski runs and lifts plus loads of places to hire equipment, snowboards etc from the nearby ski village of Prado Llano which also has many bars and restaurants.

In the other direction, you have historical Ronda with it's deep gorge and magnificent bullring and further on again there is the Circuito de Jerez - the home of the Andalucian round of the MotoGP world championship and a must see if you're into bike racing. There is also F1 and bike testing at regular intervals during the year and it's normally only a few £'s to get admission and that includes a grandstand seat!! Click the link below to visit their website:

For the ladies, nearby at Iznajar (where one of the aforementioned lakes are) there is a beauty treatment spa which does the full range of massages, facials, body wraps
